Hats off to new graduate Macy Butler! In May, Butler graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, summa cum laude. She was also recognized during the university’s annual Honors Convocation as the 2026 University Club Merit awardee.
“I am beyond grateful to have been named this year’s University Club Merit recipient,” expressed Butler. “It is truly an honor to know that my hard work and passion during my time here have been noticed by faculty. It is especially meaningful to know they have confidence in me and my future aspirations.”
In addition to her academic honors, Butler was a member of the Schmidt College of Science’s 2023 Soar-in-4 Scholars cohort. In fact, she shared that it was her favorite program as an undergraduate.
“The Soar-in-4 program connected me with approachable and supportive faculty, while providing me with the guidance and opportunities to achieve my goals in three years,” noted Butler.
As an undergraduate, she was a member of the Undergraduate Vision Lab, run by Howard Hock, Ph.D., research professor, Department of Complex Systems, Schmidt College of Science. Additionally, she served as a learning assistant for Chemistry I students, and she was an active member of the college’s Chemistry Club.
Outside of her busy academic life, she was a resident assistant for Atlantic Park Towers, the president of the Pre-Optometry Professional Society student organization and the marathon director for OwlThon at Թ, a nonprofit organization that raises funds for Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.
With one milestone accomplished, Butler now intends to pursue a Doctor of Optometry degree. As someone who experienced financial hardships growing up in a single-parent household, Butler plans to become an optometrist and dedicate her career to serving communities in need.
“My mother raised me to value generosity and compassion. She always gave to others even when she had little to give herself,” shared Butler. “Her example has inspired me to carry those values forward in my career. I hope to practice optometry with humanity, empathy and a selfless mindset, and use my profession to make quality eye care more accessible to those who need it.”
